Over the many years I’ve been doing tax negotiation work, these are the five biggest mistakes I’ve seen people make in trying to get their past due tax problems behind them.
Doing it yourself and thinking IRS collection officers are going to treat your situation with compassion. Lol, as they say. No, they really don’t have much concern or empathy about your predicament. It’s your problem, not theirs.
Doing it yourself and thinking IRS collection officers are going to work your case competently. These people are not trained or experienced in all areas of tax law. So if you don’t know when to challenge what they don’t know, guess who loses?
Doing it yourself and thinking you can deal with IRS collection officers on your own. You are at a very distinct disadvantage in doing business with them on their ground, and they will take advantage of what you do not know. They have a lot more experience than you in these matters, and they will use it to your detriment. Whether they know what they are doing, or not!
Doing it yourself and thinking that if you just ignore IRS collection officers long enough they will give up and go away. It doesn’t work that way. The more you ignore them the harder they eventually come down on you when they finally corner you. Blowing them off only makes things worse. For you.
Enlisting your local accountant or attorney to help. Not a wise idea. Even though they may know you well, and have the best of intentions in wanting to help, unless they deal with the IRS on a daily basis (like me) what they don’t know about the latest changes in laws, regulations, or procedures could cost you, big. You really need a specialist for this type of tax work.
So there you have them…the five BIGGEST MISTAKES in dealing with past due IRS tax problems. Note the common denominator in the first four…DOING IT YOURSELF.
